Engineering & Building Co. EBCO (BITAR) is a proud founder and member of the Steering Committee of the United Nations Global Compact Network in Lebanon. It was launched on September 3, 2015 at the American University of Beirut. Eng. Wael Bitar was among the keynote speakers representing Small & Medium Enterprises (SME) to discuss the importance of such voluntary corporate social responsibility initiative in a country like Lebanon.
The discussion was opened when Dr. DimaJamali, the network representative and Professor of Management at AUB, asked a main question for all of the five speakers, “What is the importance of voluntary CSR initiatives such as UN Global Compact in a country like Lebanon?” Eng. Wael’s opinion was straight forward and clear. He said, “we at EBCO (BITAR) follow the blue ocean strategy by creating a new market share for ourselves where we can be different than others. Corruption is the norm these days, and to be different in such environment we decided to be honest. We incorporated the CSR in our company’s yearly objectives.”
One of the questions he was asked was how does our company integrate the 10 principles of the UNGC in its strategies and daily operations. Eng. Bitar answered by explaining how EBCO (BITAR) decentralized its social responsibility initiatives across its projects by dedicating a certain percentage of profit to improve the quality of life surrounding them. He insisted, “EBCO (BITAR) aims to be viewed as a BIG BROTHER in its community.” He continued by mentioning some of the policies that are being practiced internally and stressed on our Occupational Health and Safety Program. The purpose behind this program is to ensure a safe environment in the workplace to our staffs as well as to the public. It is being strictly applied on the employees, workers, subcontractors as well as consultants and client, in addition to our safety campaigns that have been regularly implemented to raise awareness.
Eng. Bitar was asked about the challenges we encountered while implementing the 10 principles. He clarified that we faced challenges both internally and externally. Our employees were resistant to change and did not believe in what we were doing. We were obliged to fire employees, workers and subcontractors to set example for others. On the other side, externally we were swimming against the current. We were sure that it will take people time to appreciate what we do especially that we live in a corrupted culture/community to the bone. In the end Eng. Bitar highlighted how being part of UNGC and its local network in Lebanon did not only contribute to our Profit but also to our People and our Planet; as he called them “the Triple P”. This contribution resulted in the increase of employee retention due to high self-esteem and better working environment, in addition to being accepted by the community and being part it as he refers to it “The Big Brother theory”.
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights;
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour;
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility;
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

With over 8,000 corporate participants and 4,000 other stakeholders, it is the largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative in the world. Global Compact Local Networks are located in over 88 countries and work to advance the initiative and its Ten Principles at the country level. The Global Compact Network Lebanon will work closely with the United Nations Global Compact Headquarters to provide opportunities for learning, policy dialogue and partnership on the Ten Principles and UN goals in Lebanon. www.unglobalcompact.org

Starting November 2013, EBCO (BITAR) partnered with T.E.R.R.ELiban, an NGO devoted to the creation and implementation of environmental education within Lebanon and has been a leader in the promotion of environmental solutions for sustainable development in implementing our recycling program, as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. All papers collected are contributed to the NGO. A presentation was given to all departments and sites introducing this program, defining our goals and the proper instructions to follow. Our slogan is “ايد بايد منجمع ومنفيد”, meaning “hand in hand, we collect and we benefit”
In the beginning of 2015, we received our first certificate of appreciation for recycling 815kg and saving 14 trees in 2014. Moreover, in 2015 we recycled 560 kg of paper and by this we saved 10 trees. Our main objective is to reduce the use of papers to minimal; we have minimized tremendously the use of printing rather focusing on soft copies. This program has been an on-going initiative and has become part of our day-to-day operations. It raised the awareness of our employees on their paper use; some even took the initiative a bit further and started collecting papers at home. We aim to grow with our employee on every possible level.

Workers across the construction sector are concerned about the safety issue at work; hence there is a need to ensure safe and secure working conditions that do not endanger our life and our professional skills. Most accidents can be prevented by taking simple measures or adopting proper working procedures.
If we work carefully and take appropriate safety measures, we will reach a point where employees and workers will be convinced that public safety is an integral part of their day to day work and life. Employees and workers should cooperate with their employers and other people in complying with the safety legislation and guidelines, and should not do anything to endanger themselves and others.
Our Occupational Health & Safety Manual is intended to protect the Company’s employees, subcontractors, owners, and the general public from any work-related accidents, and its properties from any loss or damage as well as protect the environment in compliance with customer requirements and related laws and regulations.The manual’s objective is to outline important issues on safety and health that should be paid attention to on construction sites for easy reference by the workers. Everyone at EBCO (BITAR) gets a copy of the Occupational Health and Safety Manual for his reference, to be able to work in a safe environment and prevent from endangering both the human and physical capitals. We have the manual translated in both Arabic and English to be understoodby all with no exceptions.
Every year we run a safety campaign in our sites. Our “سلامتك بدنا” campaign, done in 2014, focused on the safety culture and its importance. The purpose is to make every person on site wear the personal protective equipment to avoid any accident." " من كبيرنا لصغيرنا is a picture of our team members, from our Projects Manager to our daily worker, everyone is responsible to ensure that safety on site is well maintained. In 2015, we collaborated with Civil Defense to give intensive 1 week safety training to all our team members on site with real cases.
EBCO Engineering & Building Co. was established in 1975, few months before the start of the Lebanese Civil War. The company challenged the threats and overcame the risks backed up by a loyal and motivated staff willing to fight for survival. As hard and dangerous as it was, it made it through and is now ranked among the largest contracting firms in Lebanon.
In 2005, Eng. Jalal Bitar, main founder and owner, has decided to embark with a new and improved version of EBCO naming it EBCO (BITAR). With his vision to expand, the firm is today executing big construction projects, and has offices and teams spread all over Lebanon.
EBCO (BITAR) conducts major projects with both public and private sectors. Its portfolio encompasses different types: residential, commercial, educational, health care, athletic, cultural, archeological, electro-mechanical, telecommunication and infrastructure. EBCO (BITAR)s in depth experience and engineering expertise in such a variety of projects highlights its ability to execute any given project.

Today, we celebrate the 40th year founding anniversary of EBCO (BITAR). Over the last 40 years, EBCO (BITAR) has proven to be worthy of its place as a partner of choice in the construction industry in Lebanon.
All of this would have not been possible without the pioneering efforts of our team who has served the company past and present. Some of them have been with us for over 30 years and continue to be highly dedicated to our mission and vision.
We have accomplished a lot together during our first 40 years. But what matters most now is what we do next. We will continue to focus our efforts in the construction industry not only in the Lebanon but also in other countries. We started as well to diversify our portfolio to include real estate projects in Beirut and other areas as well as dormitory and furnished apartments projects.
Today though, I am thinking much more about EBCO (BITAR)’s future than its past. I believe real estate will continue to be the backbone of this country and projects will evolve faster in the coming years.
Again, happy 40th anniversary to all who have contributed to our success.
Best,
Jalal Bitar
